Some people prefer to spend a frigid morning in the dead of winter curled up by a fire with a warm cup of hot cocoa–but those people are not Polar Plungers! Mattress World Northwest is proud to support the 2015 Polar Plunge, a fun and unique way to raise money for people with intellectual disabilities by running, jumping, tiptoeing, cannonballing, bellyflopping or otherwise launching yourself into the bitterly cold waters of Oregon in February.
Individuals, organizations, and businesses alike can join in the fundraising fun to support Special Olympics Oregon, a great organization that provides year-round sports & fitness training and athletic competitions for children and adults with intellectual disabilities–the largest disability population in the state.
The Polar Plunge raised over $450,000 last year for Special Olympics Oregon, and they’re setting the bar even higher in 2015.
Here’s how it works: You register as a “plunger” to participate in one of 5 plunges held in Portland, Medford, Eugene, Corvallis, and Bend. You can put together a team of plungers or register as an individual, and then raise at least $50 in pledges from family, friends, co-workers, whoever. Then steel your nerves, train with cold showers, and when plunge day arrives … you run into the freezing water and then run back out again. It’s as simple–and simply bone-chilling–as that.
Just because you’re plunging doesn’t mean you should abandon your personal style–costumes are expressly encouraged, and judges will hand out prizes for the Best Plunge Costumes!
How long you spend in the water is completely up to you, and if you’re too chicken to plunge, that’s okay too. There’s no penalty if you’re too chicken to plunge, and you can still contribute to the great cause by joining teams and raising money. Just remember to answer honestly when registering–are you a PLUNGER or are you CHICKEN?
The more money you raise, the better the incentive prizes, including specially made NIKE Polar Plunge gear. Not only that, but prizes will be given out to the plunger who raises the most money, the team that raises the most money, the team with the most members and much more. Plus, any plunger who raises $1000 or more is entered into a drawing to win a new, state-of-the-art 40 inch LCD TV!
Upcoming plunges will be held in Medford on February 21 and Portland on February 28. The plunges are open to the public, and all spectators are welcome free of charge.
Students and teachers can get frozen together as part of The Polar Plunge’s “School Challenge. ” Wearing costumes or your school colors is strongly encouraged! A special award goes to the K-12 school team with the most plungers, and the school that raises the most money wins a free pizza party. That’s worth a few frigid seconds, right? Plus, this year the Polar Plunge offers a special revenue sharing deal to schools: If you raise $1000 or more, your school get 20% of it back. This way everybody wins!
And for the super heroes among us there’s the Super Plunge held on February 27 in Portland, an all-day-and-night marathon of hourly plunges that only the brave, the tough, or flat-out crazy would dare to attempt.
